AI Builders Meetup: From Builder to Founder
July 23rd was a different kind of night. Gateway X, the St. Louis venture studio that builds and backs seedstrapped AI-native companies, sent Adam Brakhane to meet our builders. Adam's thoughts on how to structure an AI startup to succeed and his passion for making useful things brought the night to the next level! Notes:
Social Validation Beats a Demo
Adam's core message was social validation. Building a demo isn't the hard part anymore — AI tools have collapsed that step to almost nothing. The hard part is finding a real customer.
His prescription was concrete: go talk to 10 business owners. Find a fit. Find a partner. And when you do go talk to them, don't show up with slides — show up with a demo already built. That's the leverage AI gives a would-be founder that didn't exist two years ago: you can walk into a first meeting with a working prototype for their problem.
Find the Whitespace, Play a Game You Can Win
Two lines from Adam that stuck with the room:
"Find the whitespace."
Every category has a niche nobody's serving well yet. That's where a small team with an AI-native product can actually win, instead of getting flattened by an incumbent with distribution.
"Play a game you can win."
Pick your battle deliberately. Don't compete with OpenAI on frontier models. Don't compete with Salesforce on enterprise sales. Find the shape of a fight your team is built to win, and go there.
Adam also showed us an app he built called STL Homecoming that stitches together Linkedin data for tech people who went to high school in St.Louis (photo). It's a clever use of agentic evaluation to connect interesting data points.
Best AI Use-Case in the Wild: Mario's Survey
Mario Guerra has been on a mission to find out what St. Louis businesses are actually doing with AI right now — not the demos, not the hype, the real deployments. He turned the meetup into a little contest: whoever brought the strongest real-world AI use-case at their business would walk out with a Raspberry Pi.
The winner was Hero, for his implementation of AI in education (see photo). A great match for the "less theoretical, more applicable" thread that keeps running through this group.
News at the Lab: Second Robotics Moves the Hardware In
Second Robotics has now moved a full robot into the AI Lab. Apollo Timbers rolled it in this month, and the shop floor at the lab now has an actual co-robot on it — cameras, sensors, arm, the whole thing (see photo).
That hardware is going to be the centerpiece of the August meetup. On August 20th we're going hands-on with physical AI — the leap from AI that lives on a screen to AI that senses, reasons, and acts in the real world. Apollo will introduce Sophie (Prototype 01), an omni-wheel-drive co-robot with a 6-axis arm that takes in the world through cameras and a built-in audio neural net. He'll demo Sophie live — including a look at her using OCR to read pages straight out of a book — and whiteboard her current "brain" on the spot.
If you want to get close to the hardware and see what "AI-native" looks like when it has eyes, ears, and a reach, this is the night.
