Month 8 at the AI Lab: Robotics with Apollo
Notes from the August 20th meetup — Apollo Timbers introduced Sophie, Second Robotics' Prototype 01, and walked the room through what it takes to put AI in a machine that moves. Plus, the lab expands down the hall.
AI Builders Meetup: Hands-On with Physical AI
August 20th was the night the hardware took center stage. Second Robotics has been building at the lab, and Apollo Timbers used the meetup to properly introduce what he's been working on.
Sophie (Prototype 01) is an omni-wheel-drive co-robot with a 6-axis arm that takes in the world through cameras and a built-in audio neural net. She isn't rolling across the floor on her own quite yet, but she sees, hears, and interfaces with the room in real time. For the night, Apollo had Sophie running in coffee service mode.
Whiteboarding the Brain
Apollo whiteboarded Sophie's brain on the spot — how the pieces fit together today, and where Second Robotics is taking her next. Watching someone diagram an architecture live is a different thing from watching a finished presentation.
He also made the case for when local computer vision actually beats sending everything to the cloud. Once a machine has to act in the physical world in real time, where the inference happens stops being an implementation detail. That opened up a wider conversation about sensor usage, with a detour into how autonomous vehicles handle the same set of problems.
Inside the Shop
Apollo opened the doors of his office at the lab so people could see how these machines actually get built, hardware and intelligence alike. Not many meetups include a walk through a working robotics shop.
Don't Assume Everyone Can Do What You Can
Another thread had less to do with robots than with the people building them. If you're a developer, it's easy to fall into thinking that because something was straightforward for you, anyone could do it. That's rarely true. The set of people who can actually integrate AI with sensors and cameras is small — if that's you, don't assume it's common.
It was a good networking night on top of all that — some new faces in the room alongside the familiar ones.
News at the Lab
Two additions this month. We expanded down the hall into a small conference room, which has already turned out to be a great place to take a phone call without hunting for a quiet corner. We also added more monitors and TVs around the lab.
If you haven't seen the space lately, open coworking runs every Wednesday, 9 to 5, free. Come take a look.
